How to Pick the Right Bed for Your Dog

Has your dog taken over the couch? The bed? And your most favorite spot on yourarmchair? While you could bribe your pet with its favorite treat to get your seat back, the results will only last a little while. You’ll need a long term plan… and nothing beats furniture like a cozy little nook your dog can claim as all of his or her own.

Still, best intentions in hand, it’s tough to choose the right bed for your pooch. After all,

it’s not like you can crawl in there yourself and test it out. So, how exactly do you choose the right bed for your dog? Easy – watch your dog lounging around for a few days and jot down some notes.

Does your dog prefer to curl up into a little ball? Maybe your pup likes the feeling of leaning against something? If this is the case, a round donut dog bed or nest-style bed would made a great choice. Donut and nest beds are great for little dogs, like Yorkies, Pomeranians, and teacup breeds. Donut and nest dog beds are also terrific for older dogs and pets with arthritis and painful joint problems. Smaller-sized dogs in particular seem to prefer donut beds and nest beds. It’s common to see a small dog curl up on one side ofthe donut bed and put its little chin on the edge – this way the dog is comfortable but canalso see its surroundings. It’s as if the dog has its own “office space.”

If your dog is anything but curled up, a large rectangle, square, or round bed, might be best. These beds provide your dog easy on-and-off access and room to stretch its paws.

Regardless of the type of bed you choose, make sure the bed is bigger than the dog! When your dog is lying completely stretched on their stomach or side, not one paw should be hanging off of the bed. When in doubt, always buy the larger bed.

Another important consideration when choosing the right dog bed for your dog is the material.

If you pup suffers from allergies, you’ll want to get a hypoallergenic material that’s washable.

If you have a large home, it’s a good idea to have more than one dog bed, so that your up can get comfortable in any part of the house. Dogs tend to follow dog owners around and it’s not much fun having to relocate the dog bed from one room to the next.
